Entertainment CenterOk, this may be going a little far for a popup, but I now have an AM/FM Cassette that was removed from my old commuter car, a 1997 Kia Sephia. This is attached to a old RF modulator CD changer. The speakers are indoor / outdoor patio units. Finally, there is a 9-inch TV/VCR combination setup for 12 volt operation. For reception, on the roof of the unit there are both AM/FM and TV antennas.
Fuse PanelWhen I first bought the camper, the wiring consisted of a big ball of solder with a bunch of wires melted into it. There were no fuses, many of the wires were damaged and exposed, there was a charge controller hanging from the hitch that didn't work, and the main power converter that also didn't work. In short (the depth of my puns is just legendary) it was a mess. I started by removing most of the original wiring, the original converter, and the charge controller. Then I built a new panel using blade-type fuses to protect all of the circuits. It is mounted to a piece of Plexiglas that is attached to the inside of the electrical cabinet. This is connected to a new controller, and the tow connector was switched over to a 7 wire RV-type.
On-Board Battery ChargerSince neither the original converter (hence it’s demise) nor the replacement converter was designed to charge the battery, I added a battery charger inside the electrical cabinet. This allows me to charge the battery in camp or at home by just making the normal 120V electrical hookup and hitting a switch under the table. The only drawback to this is that it is difficult to monitor the condition of the battery when the top is down, so I added a voltmeter near the door.
Power OutletsNow that the camper has all this electrical excess, I had to find a way to use it. I added two 12 volt car-lighter-type plugs, one at each end, to power accessories (12 volt fans, CB radio, etc.). |
